As far back as he can remember, Datton has been mentored and trained by Sanbert the Paladin.  He was orphaned at a very young age, when his parents were murdered by savage lizard men.  Then, alone and scared, he was taken under the wing of his adoptive father.  The boy was trained in both the art of swordplay and chivalry, and he was granted the title of “Apprentice Paladin” by age 10.

One day, when the lad was about 12 years old, a knock came to his door.  There stood a messenger who begged Sanbert to help his village, Trovska, from vampire known as “Lad the Impaler”.  Sanbert could not, as he was needed elsewhere at the time.  Despite his mentor telling him to not to get involved, as he was too young and inexperienced, Datton sneaked out that night and traveled to the village to help the people.

It was during his battle with Anthony the Impaler and his monster squad, that Datton first met Taylor the gatorboy.  This first meeting involved nothing less than a fight, and in the end Datton spared Taylor’s life.  Although everyone doubted him, the young paladin ended up defeating Anthony, with luck, courage, and some well-placed friends.

After the vampire’s defeat, Taylor captured Datton and plotted to eat him.  But the boy used his charm and persuasiveness to convince the gatorboy that he could help him.  And so Taylor freed the holy warrior and, together, the two traveled to the City of Polywerp.

In this city, the great Beholder Lord did indeed change Taylor back to human; although the boy later sacrificed his gift to save Datton from that same beholder, reverting him back to a gator.  The two became very good friends and traveled the land together.

 

Months after his visit to Polywerp, Datton began to have nightmares in which an angel begged for rescue.  The young paladin returned home to reunite with his mentor, however discovered Sanbert left for the desert lands in search of that very same angel.

 

With Taylor injured, Datton left for Firehawk, a great city in the desert, to find both the angel and his mentor.
