Isle de Lakwa

The Isle de Lakwa was once a colony called Sugar Island.  After the slave uprising and revolution, the colonists fled and a new government was established.  The newly freed people renamed the island to Isle de Lakwa after Baron La Croix (also known as Baron Lakwa), a very important figure in Vodou culture.

 

Vodou is still widely practiced on the island.  In fact, it's widely believed that a Vodou Sorcerer called Papa Diamond helped defeat the colonists in the early 1800s.  The Voodoo practices on the mainland find their origin from Isle de Lakwa's Vodou.

 

The island is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal clear waters, and lush jungle.  Tourists from all over the world will visit the island, especially its largest city, Port Belledome.
