Summary

No Rest for the Righteous is a long comic, over 400 pages and

the plot draws from earlier comics, too.  Below is a summary

of the story and an explanation of character motivations.

Slywind is attempting to rebuild an ancient artifact known as the Sun Door which he

believes will grant him immortality and immense power.

In order to rebuild the Sun Door, Slywind uses crystals able to trap the essence (souls) of living beings.

Exploiting Alderich's xenophobia, he convinces the Lord of Polwerp to secretly enslave orcs to mine for the crystals he needs.

Slywind believes he is righteous, and will use his power for good, and that the ends justify the means.

He began his goals long before the events of any of the Datton comics.

The supernatural being Cupay Manca was once able to rule in the mortal world before he was banished

into an idol, later possessed by San'jeet.  San'jeet wished to use Cupay Manca for his own power.

Cupay Manca knows that if the Sun Door is rebuilt that he can return to the mortal world.

He exploits the young paladin, Datton, convincing the boy that he's an angel.

Datton sets off to the desert lands and rescues the "angel" from San'jeet.

Cupay Manca manipulates Datton, guiding him to the Sun Door where Cupay Manca is able

to regain his worldly power.

Datton is tricked into believing that The Man in Black (Slywind) is attempting to bring

Cupay Manca into the world and he sets off on a quest to track down The Man in Black and stop him.

In doing so, he brings Cupay Manca directly to the Sun Door.

Trivia

Chapter 6 was started when I still used Phase 2 style, but was put on hold multiple times

and during its production, Phase 3 was put into use.

Consequently, Chapter 6 is a mix of Phase 2 and 3 styles (though all pages still use the lower resolution of P2).

Scenes are not created in order, so the comic seemingly jumps back and forth between Phase 2 and 3 style.

This is most noticeable with Taylor as his hair had to be changed for P3 rendering.

Taylor's hair would later be cleaned up for use in V is for Voonder.

Blackmoon was very difficult to find in No Rest for the Righteous.

He is well hidden in the jungle, page 185.

Much like Chapter 3 was a direct follow-up to the events seen in The Prince's Pride,

Chapter 4 follows-up the events in Apocalypse Chow.

Chapter 4 is subtitled Spirit of Darkness, inspired by Heart of Darkness which inspired the film Apocalypse Now.

Cupay Manca is named after Supay, lord of demons in Incan mythology.

The Sun Door was also influenced by Incan culture.

As with Mouth of the Beholder, Datton's three primary friends represent truth (JayKey), courage (Tuatha), and love (Taylor).

Datton must face each of them in a corrupted form of what they represent.

This is similar to the three opponents the man in black must face in The Princess Bride.

In addition, the three friends are each represented by a prime color of light.

These color themes are also used within the Abyss -- the sky's color depending on the character.

In V is for Voonder, Datton and JayKey (and Voonder) are being deceptive.

As a consequence, something happens to truth....

Though we don't see the outcome in this comic, we see Flerp battle Mojave.

We later learn, in a different comic, that Flerp was killed and became an liche.

There was an entire subplot that was cut.

The people of Polywerp would rebel against the rule of Cupay Manca.

We would have seen the Aardvark Adventures and Magic Students take up (steampunk-like) arms.

This was cut due to the comic already being too long, plus I later thought it would detract from

everything happening in the Abyss.

Some images from this cut subplot survived (with minimal post work applied).

Henry and Marshall also joined in the rebellion.

Though this scene was cut, at least the duo make a cameo at the very end.

Javari's role was significantly reduced from my original plan.

He was meant to help lead the rebellion against Cupay Manca using his demon hunter skills.

However, since that subplot was cut, poor Javari was given a brutal death instead of a redemption arc.

Updated Pages

Some of the text on pages 187 and 189 is a bit sloppy.

I've cleaned up the dialogue a bit for better consistency and flow.

These updates are included in the downloads (see below).

New Covers

Chapter 4 - I used a completely different design which focuses on Mojave.

Chapter 5 - nearly identical, but I cleaned up the clothing and stylized the background.

Chapter 6 - I've lost the save files so I recreated the cover from other assets.
